Hello! Today I am going to share a how to for finding style inspiration and your own personal style. The most important thing I can tell anyone about this, is that getting to know yourself as a person is the best way to understand your own personal style and why you actually choose the things you love to wear. However if you are unsure here are some tips that will hopefully help you to find some new favourite pieces for your wardrobe.

The five main things I look to for help whenever I am looking for personal style inspiration are my surroundings (environment), social media such as Instagram, magazines, online shopping lookbooks, and television shows/movies.

To look at your surroundings for inspiration may seem silly, but they can be really helpful for not only style reasons but practical ones too. If you live somewhere where it is really cold for the majority of the year for example, you are not going to stock up on crop tops and shorts, you are going to want to look for things that layer, and are warm, and just really cozy, because who wants to be cold… For style reasons looking to your environment and surroundings can be helpful because people tend to dress differently all over the world, for example, places like New York City tend to have a much more editorial look, where as somewhere like California is relaxed and has more of a beach/summer vibe. Where I live the seasons and weather constantly change and so my wardrobe reflects that.

Social Media is absolutely amazing for style inspiration this is probably my number one go to just because it is so easily accessible, free, and it really is just a never ending source of inspiration. My favourite social media platforms to look at are Instagram (if you aren’t already following me feel free to do so @sullywittrock) and Tumblr. They have an abundance of people constantly posting outfit ideas all over the world with their own personal style that makes it a very wonderful tool for helping one to find their own personal style.

Magazines are great if you like investing a little money and are more into the old school hardcopy version of style inspiration and do not always like to stare at an electronic screen. They are also wonderful because you get a mix of pieces put together by people that want to inspire your style for a living and there are so many details that you can incorporate into your life. You do not have to try and look editorial, you can just pick and choose the pieces you want to incorporate into your style. Oh! and they are great for travelling! My personal favourite is Vogue but there are so many different kinds out there that it would be easy to find the right one for you. Also if you want a variety to look at but do not want to spend a crazy amount of money on it you could look into subscribing to something such as Texture which is pretty much a “Netflix” for magazines, although this does go against my point about avoiding an electronic device it is still a great way to help you find your personal style.

Online shopping lookbooks are one of my favourite things, I am not sure if people even know they exist on a website, they probably do, but I personally only found out about them about a year ago! If you do not know what they are they are typically on most shopping websites and it is not the new arrivals page, it is the page that is commonly called either a lookbook, campaign, or magazine. If you click on that page it will open up to the new inspiration and collection of that particular store giving looks curated by that store specifically for you (the buyer). A lookbook is great because it makes figuring out what to buy online incredibly easy, you do not need to copy the exact look the store gives you but it makes it easier to find a great outfit or pieces of one, all in one place.

Television shows and movies are all around us and although many people probably could care less what other people wear in them, I find them to be great for inspiration because they literally get to wear a new outfit every single day of the show or movie! I can only imagine having a closet like that. For example if you have seen the show Friends you would know that people raved over Rachel’s (Jennifer Aniston) personal style, and if you have not seen the show, you should watch it!

I hope this helps and if any of you are looking for more advice feel free to ask me questions!
